Take It to the Group Chat, Ep. 3: Where Do You Call 'Home' When You’re From Everywhere?
For many immigrants, there is a sense of ‘unreality’ around returning to our homelands; they are places that we are nostalgic for, yet when we return, we often realize we’ve been missing a place that no longer exists. Sometimes, it can even feel like we’re missing a place when we’re physically there.
Episode three of Take It to the Group Chat tackles exactly this feeling, and by extension, unpacks the idea of ‘home’ from the immigrant perspective, with the help of two stellar guests: Anar Ali, novelist, screenwriter and the creator and executive producer of the police drama Allegiance, and Rechie Valdez, Member of Parliament and Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth of Canada.
Is there anything more immigrant coded than the group chat? More than just a way to stay in touch with far-flung family and friends, group chats are a social space where things get complicated, nuanced and even a little heated. And season 3 of Friday Talks, Take It to the Group Chat, is bringing some of that energy to your computer screen. Hosted by Friday Things founder and editor Stacy Lee Kong, Take It to the Group Chat is a six-part video series that tackles different aspects of the immigrant experience through thoughtful conversations with a panel of experts.
